Starbucks holiday red cup 2015 marketing

Red Cup Rumble

Just when I didn’t think we could talk about Starbucks any more (and I’m a fan of the brand–gold card and all!), they put our Peppermint Mocha in a red cup and wham, the controversy of the century. Let’s take a moment to reflect on what the “debacle” means for the power-brand. The short answer is: all good things. Have you seen shorter lines? No. Less social posts? More. If anything, we are now talking about Starbucks more than ever and likely inspiring those who have been living under a rock to potentially visit their website or social channels to read the company’s response. It’s a win-win for them: less time/capital spent on design strategy, and at the end of the day, a larger share of voice. I’m wondering what the Starbucks designers have been up to since they got a break from holiday this year. I guess we will just have to stay tuned and see!

One to Watch: Whole Foods

Another power brand who always plays their holiday cards right: Whole Foods. While shopping before Thanksgiving one of their print pieces caught my eye at the cheese counter. It simply stated: Update Your Apps. Trademark simplistic design, trendy messaging, plus there is cheese on the cover so I picked it up.

As promised, inside are seemingly simple-to-create drinks and appetizers to prepare for the upcoming season of shindigs. Here’s what made this piece a home run for me: instead of just showing the completed dish and an ingredient list, they show an image of each item with applicable directions. It could not possible be any easier. Each item pictured is their own 365 brand, or something that can be purchased at Whole Foods. Not to leave the social piece untouched, they encourage you to #sharethecheer when sharing snaps of your perfectly executed apps. Congrats, Whole Foods, you continue to win!
